Tracktion Waveform mono phase: mixer fold, polarity, plugin tips vs spectral phase repair
Tracktion Waveform headphones and wide plugin racks can hide cancel. Mixer mono fold (or a mono utility on the master), track polarity invert, small clip align, and honest stereo FX / imagers come first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, mixer mono fold, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What Waveform mono-phase failure sounds like
- Master or bus mono fold thins a rack return. Stereo reverb, ping-pong, or widener beds look huge in Waveform headphones, then mono fold eats Mid body.
- Track polarity never flipped on dual paths. Dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel edit/rack chains cancel until you invert one path.
- Stereo imagers on folder or bus tracks. Third-party wideners feel wide in Waveform; phone and club mono fold thin the kick or vocal chest.
- Send FX without a mono proof. Stereo aux returns fight dry when you engage a mono fold on the mixer or master.
- Fine in Waveform headphones, broken on export or livestream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Waveform mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Engage mono fold on the master / monitor path (or insert a mono utility). Toggle it; do not leave it on.
- A/B critical folders, buses, and stereo plugin inserts with mono engaged. Note kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, stereo return bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass bus, vocal vs stereo FX return, layered clip stacks.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on the master, then with mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Waveform (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity invert on one path
Use track / plugin polarity invert on one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel rack when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small clip / delay align (not Haas width)
Nudge the secondary clip or use a short delay (samples/ms) to match the hero. Do not use Haas L/R delay as "width" before a mixer mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Mixer mono fold honestly
Mono fold is a check and a destination fold, not a repair. If mono kills the part, fix polarity and routing first. Do not "rescue" with more stereo imagers.
4. Aux / rack FX levels
Stereo FX returns (reverb, delay, chorus) often cause Mid cancel when summed with dry. Mono-check with FX muted vs open. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical returns. Related: stereo reverb mono.
5. Plugin format and width hygiene
PHIXER loads as VST3 (and CLAP/AU where the host allows) on stereo inserts like any Waveform effect. Prove latency/compensation with bypass A/B. Do not stack competing stereo imagers before a mono fold check. Format choice does not replace polarity or delay match.
6. Only then residual spectral repair
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after polarity, delay, mono honesty, and FX hygiene, PHIXER can help. Prove with mixer mono A/B.
Waveform path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Master / monitor mono fold | Folders / aux returns hollow | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends |
| Stereo aux / rack returns | Dry+wet hollow Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return lows |
| Widener on folder / bus | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; mono fold proof |
| Parallel rack / edit chain | Dry + parallel cancel body | Polarity; align; simplify parallel |
| Export / livestream fold | Fine in Waveform, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / mono fold habit |
Waveform checklist (to export or stream)
1. Keep a mono fold toggle
Make mixer / master mono muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust Waveform headphones alone.
2. Audit aux returns muted vs open under mono
Find which stereo return eats Mid. Lower Send level or simplify the return.
3. Bypass wideners during the check
Prove the bed without imagers. If mono is fine without them and broken with them, the widener is the problem.
4. Re-check after rack or folder rebuilds
New parallel racks and FX changes alter polarity and latency. Invert and mono-fold again after you commit.
When PHIXER helps in Waveform
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo clip, stereo folder print, stereo FX bed).
- Polarity, clip align, mono honesty, aux levels, and widener hygiene are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B mixer mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace track polarity, clip nudge, or to rescue extreme widener settings.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when mono fold engages | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| Aux return open hollows Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return | Dry+wet fold |
| Imager huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; center lows | Width ≠ phase repair |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed (VST3) | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono clip alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / clip choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-fold auditioned yet.
- The fix is obviously polarity, clip nudge, quieter aux Send, or bypassing a widener.
- You want PHIXER to make the session wider or "more Waveform." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: mixer mono fold → polarity on dual paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest aux returns → widener bypass for proof → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before export or stream.
